MAIN GOALS OF THE MINISTRY OF FISHERIES AND AQUATIC RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT ARE PRODUCTION OF FISH REQ

The Minister stated that the main goals of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development are focused on production of domestic fish requirement within the country, as a country surrounded by sea and increase foreign exchange earnings by increasing fish exports.

The Minister stated this during his speech delivered today at the ceremony for assuming duties as the Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, held at the Ministry.

The Minister further said,

At present we have to address several issues and the first and foremost among them is fish export ban imposed on fish and fishery products of the country by the EU. Several programmes are already being implemented to revoke this export ban imposed on fish and fish products from Sri Lanka. The main achievement is installation of VMS equipment in 1090 fishing boats engage in high seas fishing. EU mission is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka in October 2015 and we believe that the EU ban could be revoked and we can achieve progress in exporting fish again to countries of the EU.

Mr. Nimal Hettiarachchi, Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Mrs. Mangalika Adikari, State Secretary to the State Ministry of Fisheries, Mr. Christy Lal Fernando, Director General, Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Heads of Institutions under the purview of the Ministry and large number of officials participated for the event.
